Scenes from our 2006 Season production of Suor Angelica

One of the sisters (Keira Grant, left) announces that a splendid coach has arrived outside the convent. Perhaps one of the sisters has a visitor. Sister Angelica prays that it will be a visitor from her family.

Her prayer is answered — the visitor is the Princess, her mother’s sister (Elizabeth McLeod), but she has not arrived in a forgiving mood. Angelica had disgraced the family by having an illegitimate child. Now Angelica’s younger sister has found a man willing to marry her despite the stain, and the Princess has come to demand that Angelica sign away any right to the family fortunes.

Sister Angelica begs for pity and understanding, but the Princess is unrelentingly cold. Angelica says that she has offered everything to the virgin in expiation for her sin, but there is one thing she cannot do. She cannot forget her child. She begs the Princess to tell her about him.
