After Alfredo leaves, Violetta bids farewell to her guests. Lined up to pay their respects are the Marquis (John Allec, left), Flora (Sara DiGirolamo), Doctor Grenvil (Alon Eshet) and Gaston (Artour Razgoev).

Left alone, Violetta (Carrie Gray) fantasizes that perhaps Alfredo could be the man she longs for, a man who would truly love her and free her from the endless round of empty pleasure that is her life as a courtesan. As the act ends, she realizes her fantasy is madness, and she toasts the life of freedom and indulgence she feels doomed to pursue.

Act 2 opens with Alfredo and Violetta living happily together in the country, although Alfredo (Romulo Delgado) is disturbed to hear that Violetta must sell her possessions in order to pay their bills. When he leaves, his father Giorgo Germont (Gerald Hannon) arrives to beg Violetta to leave his son — the scandal of their relationship is destroying any chance his daughter has of marrying the man she loves.

Finally persuaded that her love is doomed, she writes to Alfredo to say she is leaving him. When he enters, she throws herself passionately into his arms, telling him how much she loves him, and then leaves.

Alfredo is shocked when he reads her letter. His father enters, tries to console him and begs him to return to his country home in Provence, but Alfredo guesses that Violetta has returned to her old life as a courtesan in Paris, and vows to confront her.
