Act 3 opens with a party at Flora’s. Dr. Grenvil (Alon Eshet, left), Flora (Sara DiGirolamo), and the Marquis (John Allec) exchange gossip — Violetta has left Alfredo, and will be coming to the party with Baron Douphol.

The guests play games of chance, gossip, and are entertained by a group of gypsies who tell fortunes and dance some thunderous flamenco (below left, Patricia Estay and Nicole Samame; right, Claudio Grez).

To everyone’s surprise, Alfredo (Romulo Delgado) arrives and is soon winning big at the gaming table. When the Baron (Stephen Targett) arrives with Violetta (Carrie Gray), he warns her not to speak with Alfredo.

The Baron challenges Alfredo at cards, and loses a fortune. When he and the other guests go to dinner, Alfredo returns and confronts Violetta. Determined to keep her promise to his father, she says she now loves the Baron. Alfredo calls everyone back into the room, denounces her and throws his winnings in her face. The act ends when the Baron challenges Alfredo to a duel.
