Amelia (Maria Knight) arrives at midnight at the gallows field to search out the herb that will cleanse her heart of love for her husband’s best friend. She prays for courage.



Riccardo (Taras Chmil) has followed her, and though she is at first reluctant to admit her love for him, she finally does so. He is overjoyed.



Renato (Yevgeny Yablonovsky) arrives to warn Riccardo that his enemies are approaching and mean to kill him. Amelia is terrified, but has veiled herself so that her husband will not recognize her. She persuades Riccardo to flee, but only after he has extracted a promise from Renato that he will guide this woman back to the city without speaking to her or asking her name.



The assassins arrive, threaten Renato, and in the struggle that ensues Amelia’s veil falls from her face. Renato is thunderstuck. Tom (Frank De Jong, left), Sam (Brad Hoover) and the other conspirators are deeply amused, and laugh their way off stage.
