In their Latin Quarter loft on Christmas Eve, the poet Rodolfo (James Dundass, left) and his painter friend Marcello (Gerald Hannon) complain of the lack of heat and food. The situation is so desperate that Rodolfo decides to warm up the room by burning the manuscript of the play hed been writing.

Their roommate, the philosphy student Colline (Darcy Marin), arrives, having failed to pawn any books, and joins the boys around the fire, which soon goes out. Matters improve with the arrival of their musician friend Schaunard (Oslen Hill, centre), who brings firewood, food, wine and money.

Schaunard offers a rather lengthy explanation of how he got the money, but the boys are interested only in getting food on the table.

The arrival of their landlord Benoit (Scott Saini, centre), demanding payment of back rent, brings festivities to a halt until the boys get him drunk, get him to admit hes a bit of a ladys man, and then throw him out in mock indignation for having cheated on his wife!
