Promising to join his friends at the Café Momus after he’s done some writing, Rodolfo is interrupted by a knock on his door. It’s a neighbour, Mimi (Natalie Donnelly), whose candle has gone out on the stairwell. It is clear that she is unwell and that the climb has exhausted her. When she accidentally drops her key, Rodolfo (James Dundass) engineers that his candle is extinguished as well and pretends to help her search, but soons find occasion to take her hand.

He tells her of his live of poverty, the riches he finds in poetry and art, and how she has stolen his heart. Mimi responds by describing her quiet life as a seamstress, and her passion for the warmth and flowers of spring. It is clear they are falling in love.

Though Rodolfo would like to stay in the loft with Mimi, she persuades him to take her along with him to the Café Momus to meet his friends. They sing of their newfound love as they depart.
